This one is for all you beer lovers. My boyfriend and I only had two nights and one full day in Munich, Germany on our mini Euro-trip. It was also raining most of the day, so what better to do than drink beer? If you ever find yourself in this German city for a day, here are three of the best places to drink beer in Munich!
#1 Hofbrauhaus Munchen (HBhaus)
I think it's a sin to leave Munich without stopping by the most famous beer hall in the world, Hofbrauhaus Munchen! This historically royal brewery is a whopping 500-years old! Apparently, their beer quickly became popular thanks to the first brewer, Heimeran Pongratz, and the famous Bavarian Beer Purity Law of 1516 that stated only natural ingredients could be used in the brewing process.
When you arrive to this giant beer hall, you must order a liter of beer which they will serve in a HUGE glass mug! The old hall can hold thousands of people with multiple floors, gorgeous paintings on the ceilings, and live music at night. You will see many German families and tourists coming together here. This place is a must see even if you don’t drink beer. They have woman walking around in the traditional German Dirndl Dresses selling pretzels, and also delicious looking meals for a reasonable price.
My favorite part were the large tables which invite you to intermix and socialize with other fellow beer drinkers. We met several people including two friendly German guys who sat down with us and told us some history about where we were. They told us they would be there for 5-6 hours which means 5 or 6 of the HUGE liters of beer for them! I was shocked because I was struggling to finish just ONE liter! But then I realized where we were, and remembered that Germans love their beer.
#2 Holy Home
The next place is a hip local dive bar named Holy Home. We found this spot thanks to our two new German friends who recommended we check out the Gartnerplatz area for more bars. The dim lighting and red walls give this bar a romantic intimate feeling. The price for beer is good and they have some great local beers on tap. I enjoyed the atmosphere and unique decorations behind the bar.
The bartender was really nice and relaxed even though every table and chair was filled. Sometimes finding a friendly bartender at a cool busy lounge can be unusual. But you will definitely feel at home at the Holy Home.
#3 Smart Stay Hostel Munich City
I was beyond impressed with the Smart Stay Hostel's cool atmosphere that included a pool table and dimly lit bar area (props to my boyfriend for finding this one on hostelworld.com). They have several German beers on tap and a happy hour daily from 7-9pm where beers are just 1.90-euros a pint! After coming from Switzerland the day before where a good beer can run you close to 10-euros, this was like heaven for us!
If you’re looking for a place to stay and drink, I recommend this place. They’re located in a good location of the city and have a very friendly staff. They seem to stay very busy with foreigners from all over the world coming in and out daily, so it's a great place to meet people. And my absolute favorite part was the SUPER COMFY pillows in the beds!!
Thanks for reading! I hope you beer fans find what you're looking for in the fun city of Munich!
